Farm Frenzy is a sweet little farming game on Android. No… come back! It’s not what you think! If like me the idea of having a Farmville clone on your device fills you with despondent tears of rage, rest assured this is quite different. Farm Frenzy instead includes various levels, timed challenges and angry bears!

Farm Frenzy wasn’t really what I expected. I thought it would be another tycoon clone, based on a farm and so rationally felt a wave of Farmville-related nausea wash over me like an unpleasant smell. However, when I played it I found that I was very wrong indeed, because, while it is based on a farm, gameplay is nothing like those Facebook behemoths at all. It all begins with ducks…

You start off with a couple of ducks who feed and lay eggs. You can add ducks if you have enough money and, as Old McDonald would probably say, ‘More ducks will lay more eggs.’ Once you have eggs you can sell them. Early levels get you to create and sell as many eggs as you can. This is where bears come in. Unlike any farm I’ve ever heard of, bears often drop out of the sky in Farm Frenzy. These must be quickly caged (by tapping) otherwise they will eat your ducks. Nightmare! However, once caged you can sell them at the market too for a tidy profit.

As mentioned, it starts with making eggs and selling them, increasing numbers of ducks, avoiding bears and making money. As the game progresses however, you also have to manufacture other products including: cheese, butter, cloth and cakes. There are nine products in total so you have to work up to making them all. You have to combine products to create some items, so you then have to ensure you are collecting enough ingredients to proceed. Additionally, there are 5 different animals to use in the game to make different products.

Aside from the farming, there are slew of extra bonuses in the game which can be found in the shop and VIP Zone. Here you can buy new buildings when you need to and upgrade your existing ones. Speed is of the essence in Farm frenzy as scores and trophies are awarded dependent on how fast you complete a level. So don’t expect a quiet walk in the countryside with this game. It’s busy, quick and you’ll need to have your wits about you to progress through the colossal 72 levels contained in the full version.

Farm Frenzy is lots of fun and very fast-paced. The learning curve is sympathetic and it never overwhelms you or puts you off in that way. It was disappointing to see that you still have to pay for VIP items, even if you have bought the full game. It essentially means the best scores will be for those people who have forked out for upgraded (and thus faster) items.

Farm Frenzy is very addictive and often unputdownable. Levels are usually a few minutes so it’s great for casual play as well as longer sessions.

The graphics are OK without being amazing. Reminiscent of early Java computer games. They do what they need to do although they are not particularly detailed or smooth. They do however, work well with gameplay and the sound.

The sound has the potential to be quite annoying, but to be honest it never annoyed me enough to switch it off or turn it down. There are plenty of farmyard sound effects too.
