Android tablet market share now at 39% according to Strategy Analytics

Everyone continues to say Android tablets will never put a dent in Apple’s iPAD 2. Last March, I predicted that by March of this year, Android tablets would rule the market share or at least be close. For the 4th quarter 2011, Android tablets maintained a 39% market share. Apple’s iPad dropped to 58%. At this point it doesn’t look like Android will take over by March, but I did say that at a minimum things would be close. With the glut of tablets offered by various manufacturers along with Amazon’s Kindle Fire, there’s no way that Android tablets won’t enjoy success. They will eventually dominate the entire market, it’s just a question of when?

Global shipments of tablets hit a record 26.8 million units in the 4th quarter, which was up 150% from a year earlier of 10.7 million in the 4th quarter 2010. Apple sold roughly 15.4 million iPads worldwide which isn’t too shabby. If you’re doing the math, Android tablet sales for the quarter were a little over 10 million, and Android’s tablet market share the previous year was at 29%. You have to give credit to Apple though because their success is based on one tablet where with Android it’s many manufacturers and several devices.

I think its now clear that Android tablets are here to stay and that developers need to step it up. 2011 was just a start for the Android and tablets, but 2012 should put them in the forefront.
