Acer A510 tablet hitting Europe in April with Tegra 3, Android 4.0

This bad boy was one of the most exciting things we saw at CES. The Acer Iconia Tab A510 was an unannounced tablet then, and it was not a bad one. Well, the tablet has finally been announced at a pre-CeBIT event in Germany. It’s being released in Europe the following April at a price of €500.

When we saw this tablet at NVIDIA’s booth, it left a rather good impression on us. The representatives were not able to tell us anything about the unannounced 10.1-inch tablet (1280x800p). We now know that it packs a 1.3 GHz Tegra 3 processor (quad-core), 1 GB of RAM and 16/32/64 GB of internal storage. Ports include a microSD card slot, a mini-USB port and a mini-HDMI port.

Acer has also announced a version with 3G connectivity, called the Acer Iconia Tab A511. It was not mentioned whether this tablet would be released along with the WiFi models or not.

We know 500 Euros is not very cheap, but the tablet should not feature the same price when it hits the States. The tablet market is in the middle of an interesting transition here in the US. Acer has been offering the same specs as ASUS for about the same price, and we assume this tablet will come at a price similar to the $500 Transformer Prime. But it is hard to compete with ASUS offering its 7-inch Tegra 3 MeMo 370T for only $250.

For now, all we can do is sit tight and wait for Acer to announce the A510's price and availability for America. Welcome to the year of the quad-core tablets. Let’s see what the future holds. What price-point would convince you to purchase the A510?

Acer 510 coming in April for €500

Way back in November we got a glimpse of Acer’s upcoming tablet User Agent profiles. Fast forward to January and those same tablets are nearing release. Specifically the Acer A510, a Tegra 3-powered, Android 4.0 Iconia Tab . Acer showed off the tablet at a German event announcing that the tablet would hit shelves in April for €500. Seeing as how Acer’s A200 retails for around $300, the A500 will likely retail for around $500 when it come to the US. The tablet that should really be on your mind, however, and the one Acer has been keeping quite is the A700 which features a massive 1920×1200 display. Hopefully we’ll hear more from Acer on that at CeBIT come March.

MIT open sources App Inventor; on track for April public release

Remember App Inventor? It was one of the casualties of the Google Labs kill order that came down late last year. However the WYSIWYG app building tool got a reprieve at the last minute from MIT, who in turn received a donation from Google to help establish the MIT Center for Mobile Learning.

The MIT group reached one of their first goals late Friday with the initial release of the App Inventor source code. It’s freely available here to check out, and MIT will be occassionaly updating it to match what they are doing in-house.

Documentation is fairly sparse at the moment; the majority of their focus is on getting their large-scale public server up and running by April. But if you want to start playing now, there’s a Google group that appears fairly active already.

If you want to get into the tester group that’s working with the latest updates MIT has, you can still request access here. But don’t expect to hear anything immediately. The list is quite long, and they don’t want to overload the service.

We’ll keep tabs on the service as it gets closer to the full public release this Spring.
