Google Wallet comes to Nexus phones on AT&T and Verizon

After much hoopla Google Wallet finally launched on the Nexus S last September, but it was only available on Sprint’s version of the phone and not T-Mobile’s. Then when Verizon announced their Galaxy Nexus, it was soon discovered that they would not support Google Wallet. Verizon claimed that Google Wallet “needs to be integrated into a new, secure and proprietary hardware element in our phones” and they were continuing their commercial discussions with Google on the issue.

Thanks to a recent app update, Nexus users on AT&T and Verizon can now install Google Wallet directly from the Android Market. Many users previously obtained a hacked copy or side-loaded it onto their device, but now they can have the comfort of getting the latest official version from Google.

AT&T users with the Nexus S or GSM Galaxy Nexus just need to search for Galaxy Nexus and install it. Those devices are recognized as supported in the Market and it’s a 1-click isntall.

For Verizon owners of the Galaxy Nexus, the process takes a few extra steps. They need to visit the Android Market website from their browser and then trick their device into installing the official app. It might sound like a little much, but it only takes around one minute to complete.

From your phone open the browser and head to http://market.android.com. (Tip:  You may want to clear data and defaults on browser and Market before doing this.)Search for “Google Wallet.” (If your browser prompts you to open the Market, don’t. Just stay in the browser.)When the results come back, tap on the Google Wallet icon.Tap the “Install” button from within the browser and then sign into your Google account. (Again, this is all from the browser, not the Market app.)Once you have signed in, you should be redirected back to the Market page in the browser.Obviously, you will not have the option to install there since the VZW Nexus is not supported.Tap the back button until you are prompted for the Market or Browser again, this time choosing the Market. The Android Market should open to the Google Wallet page with an option to install.

If it doesn’t work right away, just sign out of the Android Market website from your browser and try the steps again. I tried this on my Verizon Galaxy Nexus and it worked on the 2nd try. Previously I had side-loaded an older version of Google Wallet, and the install updated it to the latest version with no problems.

We don’t have a Nexus S or GSM Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile to test this trick out, but hopefully it works on that device as well. If you happen to have one on hand, let us know if you were able to install Google Wallet from the Market.

At least AT&T is now allowing Google Wallet on some Android phones with NFC, and hopefully Verizon is close to reaching an agreement with Google.

Nexus S 4G one step closer to official Android 4.0.4 update

If you own the Sprint Nexus S 4G and are waiting on the official update to Android 4.0, then we have some good news for you. A new internal testing ROM was just spotted on Google’s servers that updates the Nexus S 4G to Android version 4.0.4, build number IMM26.

The file was quickly pulled after it was spotted, but if you are adventurous you can head over to xda-developers and grab a mirrored copy. I’d normally post a guide with instructions for the manual update, but since the official file has been removed from Google’s servers we just suggest the average user wait it out.

Reports suggest that this version was signed with release keys, which likely means it’s we will see the official update in the coming weeks. I’ve been using Android 4.0 on my T-Mobile Nexus S that I gave to a family member and its been running great so far. If you try out this leaked software on your Sprint Nexus S 4G, let us know how it performed in the comments below.

Download: Sprint Nexus S 4G Gets Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich IMM26 ROM

There’s great news for those loyal fans who stuck with their Sprint CDMA Nexus S 4G handsets instead of running over to Big Red and snatching a Galaxy Nexus.  The incredibly talented folks over at XDA managed to get the Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4 ROM up and running for the second iteration in the Google Nexus family.  The ROM is reported to be in its final stages of testing and offers a few new features and updates.  Among them are a new software modem, bootloader and is now at biuld IMM26.  Most if not all of the features are stable and working, including the WiMax radios.  Further proof of a new build is revealed by its build date, January 30th 2012.  So rest assured it’s not the same build we saw previously.  It will be nice for Nexus S 4G owners to be slightly ahead of the curve, as you all know Google has already released the Android 4.0.3 ICS build for the Nexus S 3G model as well as for a few other devices.  If you’re feeling frisky, hit the downloads below and don’t forget to report back any issues you may find. Feel free to report them in our forum so as to alert other Nexus S 4G owners as well.  As always, be aware that you’re doing this at your own risk and the staff here at TA are in no way responsible if you brick your device.  So, in short, know what the heck you’re doing!  Good luck and enjoy.  For your convenience, we’ve provided all the downloads you need below courtesy of XDA (dev mrxkills).  Big thanks goes to the rest of the developers who gave their blood, sweat and tears on tweaking this update for the Nexus S 4G.

Refreshed Galaxy Nexus Plus with faster CPU and improved camera on the way?

Could Google be working on a slightly updated version of the Galaxy Nexus? It wouldn’t be the first time a manufacturer refreshed a device just months after the initial release. A recent benchmark score spotted on the Nenamark site shows a Galaxy Nexus featuring a PowerVR SGX544 graphics processor.

The faster SGX544 GPU is included with Texas Instruments’ upcoming OMAP4470 processor. This is the successor to the original OMAP4460 found in the Galaxy Nexus, that includes the older SGX540 GPU.

While it’s true this result could have been spoofed, we have seen evidence of a Galaxy Nexus with a different processor speed before in a leaked ad for Sprint. Samsung underclocked the 1.5 GHz OMAP4460 to run at 1.2 GHz in the Galaxy Nexus, so it’s possible they could underclock the 1.8 GHz OMAP4470 to run at speeds around 1.5 GHz.

Nenamark2 benchmark: OMAP4460 on the left, OMAP4470 on the right.

Even though the two processors feature very similar model numbers, the OMAP4470 is advertised as offering 2.5x the graphics performance of the OMAP4430. We recently saw the OMAP4470 in action at CES, and witnessed a Nenamark2 score that was around 70% faster than the previous generation.

The Sprint version of the Galaxy Nexus is coming soon, but we still don’t know much about the official specs. Rumors have suggested it could feature an improved 8 MP camera (compared to 5 MP of the original), so it’s possible that Samsung and Google could update the processor as well if a faster one is available in time.

I’m sure a few owners of the original Galaxy Nexus will complain, but I’m happy to see a Galaxy Nexus refresh in the coming months, if these rumors turn out to be true.

ClockworkMod Touch beta goes live for Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S

Android developer Koush has been working on a touch enabled version of his popular ClockworkMod Recovery for quite some time now. He posted a teaser video on Friday, January 27,  and already there’s a beta version available to download for the Galaxy Nexus and GSM Nexus S.

Announced on Google+, both versions (Verizon CDMA, international GSM) of the Galaxy Nexus are supported in the beta, but only the GSM Nexus S is. Not much information was made available on the beta, but so far reports seem good. There’s over 50 comments on the original Google+ post with download links, many of which are users confirming everything works well.

If you’re comfortable with Fastboot and understand the risks involved with flashing a recovery still in beta, head on over to Google+ to download Koush’s touch-based ClockworkMod Recovery now. To get an idea of how the recovery will work, check out the video below. If you decide to install the recovery, let us know how it works in the comments below.

Google Brings Sprint Galaxy Nexus Sign-Up Page Out of the Freezer

A few weeks ago, at CES, Sprint made the announcement that they would bringing the Samsung Galaxy Nexus in the 32GB variety to their newly minted LTE network. If you are one of those folks on Sprint that are looking forward to this device and you’re impatiently waiting it appears that the release is coming soon. The registration section for the Sprint device has gone live on the official Galaxy Nexus site which will allow you to be notified when the phone goes up for sale.

The Sprint version will come with Google Wallet installed unlike Verizon‘s, and will also be free of any bloatware, again unlike Verizon’s version. However there is nothing to suggest what the phone will be going for when it becomes available on Sprint but if you are interested in being one of the first in knowing when it’s available you can hit the source to sign up. You can check out our hands on with the Sprint Galaxy Nexus at CES. Also if you’re interested you can check out the review on Verizon’s version here. While it’s on a different network I am sure it’s essentially the same device. Enjoy!

Galaxy Nexus Infringes on Apple Patents, Or So Apple Says

Apple is at it again. This time they have included the Galaxy Nexus in their onslaught of patent lawsuits. What’s the infringement you ask? Well it’s the slide-to-unlock utility model in Germany.  That’s right Apple has added the Galaxy Nexus to it’s ongoing attack of Android devices and the manufactures that make them. Now we won’t get the courts decision until March 16,2012, so we will just have to wait and see if Apple wins this or if Samsung can walk away clean and clear.

We don’t have too much information on this one yet folks as it was just filed today. However we know how these things go. They take time to play out and could go either way. Samsung’s legal costs are all ready in the millions in Germany, so expect this to continue and we will have all the coverage of it as it unfolds. Are you sick of Apple’s lawsuits? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.

WugFresh easy root tool for the Galaxy Nexus now with more features and support for the GSM version

Remember that really cool root and unlock tool by WugFresh we showed you a few weeks ago? It’s been updated and is now at version 1.22. If you remember, this tool was only available to the Verizon Galaxy Nexus, but now it also supports the GSM version. So now you can unlock and root either device and flash it back to stock and re-lock it with ease, but there’s more. They added the ability to backup all your user apps, system apps, and app data. All it takes is one click to restore them. You can also flash or boot any img files you want to any partition. Last but not least, you can flash any current or future stock Android release. It still makes sense to learn how to do these things manually, but for those that want to get into modding, but are afraid to give it a try, this is definitely worth checking out.

Hands-on Video: Sprint Galaxy Nexus

Posted Wednesday, January 11th, 2012 at 9:03 am by Antonio Wells CommentsHands-on Video: Sprint Galaxy Nexus

Watch on Mobile

Shortly after Sprint confirmed its Galaxy Nexus with 4G LTE capability at CES 2012 we got some hands-on video of it. There is not much difference from the locked International and Verizon versions with the exception of the processor specs stated to be slightly higher at 1.5GHz versus 1.2GHz. Availability is still TBD, however, it will probably launch in Q2 as Sprint rolls out more of their 4G LTE network.

Google and LG teaming up for a Nexus TV?

Plans are supposedly on the table for LG to get first access to Google TV software. The partnership is expected to be similar to that which Google struck with Samsung and HTC for creating Nexus phones. At this time both parties have declined to comment but neither have debunked the claims either. I personally own Sony’s NSX32-GT1, the 32? television. Since purchasing the device, Google TV has certainly matured and it seems manufacturers agree if the number of new Google TV partners are any indication. If ICS is in these systems’ future, it will get even better, fast.

One thing is for sure, the Google TV LG previewed at CES (above) certainly looks fitting of the Nexus brand. With design lines like that, I’m sure LG can bring a proper Nexus TV to market. Get another perspective of that new LG Google TV after the break.
