Enchanted Realm is a cheerful and highly polished tycoon game with a medieval twist. The game has been developed by Game Insight, the company behind the hugely popular titles My Country, Rock the Vegas, Crime Story and Paradise Island. This newer game places you as the Lord of a quaint medieval community and your job is to grow your town into a prosperous and content kingdom. It’s another take on an already popular genre which is very well developed and full of immersive casual gameplay and tasks.

Cons

Having the music on all the time becomes a test of strength.Very casual, not much continuous gameplay.

Enchanted Realm is a slick tycoon game with a medieval/castle/kingdom/fantasy theme. You are escorted and advised along your journey by a voluptuous and doe-eyed princess who pops up and tells you how you are progressing from time to time. You begin with very little and the aim is to get your township up and running.

To have a working kingdom you need crops to grow in order to make goods and places to then turn those goods into money. So, you start with crops such as carrots and wheat, and places like a market and a bakery and, as you increase levels (points provided based on activity), you also gain more prosperous means to make money, such as a tavern or a weapon shop.

You also need to house your peasants and there are of course a number of housing options available. You can make your budding kingdom pretty with an arrangement of ornaments. You can improve your castle, use magic to solve problems, expand your kingdom outwards and acquire various collections. The more I have played this game, the more it reminds me of Cityville, albeit with a magical twist.

I’ve spoken before about ‘thresholds’ in tycoon games. It kind of represents how long you can play the game before you run out of energy/money and need to either go away and wait for these to replenish, or invest real money into the games virtual currency. I think with Enchanted Kingdom this is unfortunately quite low. I found gameplay became very sporadic when you enter the game, harvest crops, replant more and restock shops, etc. You can do all these things in less than a few minutes. Then you run out of energy and have to leave the game, or get your wallet out.

The game does however have all kinds of treats in store for the patient (or wealthy). There’s a fun plot line involving magic and witches – good and bad, in addition to a diverse range of missions and tasks to fulfil. There’s a lot of potential there if you are not put off by the low threshold.

I think once you get into the game, that is the ebb and flow and schedule of checking in on your crops, businesses, castle and mission objectives, the game has huge potential to be lots of fun and something you got back for time and time again.

I think if you’re a fan of the tycoon genre gaming, this is a neat and polished addition and certainly something a fan could really get into. However, I think as the game seems to have a relatively low threshold of gameplay (that is, the amount of time you can play the game at any one time without needing to buy in-game currency in order to replenish energy, etc.), I am unsure whether it will attract new gamers to the tycoon genre.

The graphics are beautiful and drip in color and vibrancy. The animations are all nicely detailed and the whole appearance of the game looks well, quite enchanting!

The sound effects for the various tasks you perform; replenishing stocks, harvesting crops, etc. is pretty typical of similar games. The music, however, is an electronic dubbing of a traditionally medieval ditty which grates severely after a short time. Less appealing than Nyan Cat!
